First Wednesday Grand Prize Winner!

First Wednesday Report

Hello everyone!

I come bearing news of a wonderful First Wednesday event held at the library today! A flurry of students poured in all day, enjoying free coffees with their food purchases, enjoying tasty fortune cookies (that were both delicious and motivational), looking over the great Chinese New Year display (right next to the cookies, so how could you miss it?), and taking part in the activities all day long.

I would now like to let you in on the report that Annette Fisher sent my way (she is the Information Literacy Coordinator at the library):

Study Abroad
The first event for our very first FWL was a discussion on Study Abroad with students who had studied abroad and the Director of the Marywood program, David Crisci. This discussion was spirited and lively because students told of their experiences in Italy, Brazil, and Chile. Several topics were covered including financial aid, how to implement your study abroad, culture, and education. David Crisci will soon be overseas recruiting students to our campus so talk to him soon if you want to know how to successfully launch your study abroad. An interesting tidbit from the discussion: one of the student speakers had never even traveled in an airplane. Imagine his excitement with his engagement with the land of his grandparents!

Diversity
The next presentation, led by Madeline Levy-Cruz, highlighted the outreach of the Office of Diversity Efforts. Initiatives from the Office include: Diversity United and the International Club. This Office also works with the Office of International Affairs on campus. There are several endeavors that are in the works for the month of February including: Movies, the weekly Black History Quizzes, Library Displays, and a capstone feature on 2/24 highlighting a Fashion Show, Step Performers, and a performance by singer, Tara Watkins. The week of Feb. 20th will feature a Scavenger Hunt. The homepage of the Office of International Affairs is welcoming--check it out; there are many things to do with the this Office, so get involved.

Storytelling
Stories of foolishness and wisdom were presented in the Storytelling session. Annette Fisher, Information Literacy Coordinator and Storyteller, told the stories: "The Contest between Wisdom and Luck"(an old Yiddish tale with an ending that begs the question: so what would you choose in your life: wisdom or luck?) and an Irish tale about the laziest/most hardworking girl in all Ireland--(or was Eileen just in the right place at the right time?) Stay tuned for more storytelling as Annette presents other sessions during National Library Week. How convenient for this Storyteller that the actual theme for NLW is "Create your own story @ your library."

New Database

It is my pleasure to announce the addition of a new database for use by all Marywood students, faculty, and staff. It is not yet on the database page (on the libray's website), but will be shortly. The database is called the "Catalog of Digital Historical Newspapers (NewspaperCat) and is available at: http://www.newspapercat.org

From the authors:
"NewspaperCat is an online database providing links to over 1000 full-text digital newspapers in the United States and Caribbean. The project's current coverage, which began with the Southeastern United States, is growing rapidly and will soon cover all fifty states. The purpose of NewspaperCat is to improve access to historical newspapers digitized by libraries, archives, historical societies and other non-profit organizations that remain buried within search engine returns such as Google PageRank. These newspapers represent a rich source of primary research material for researchers, students, and the general public. The project to build NewspaperCat was funded by the George A. Smathers Libraries and developed with the cooperation of the Digital Library Center of the University of Florida."

Stories have always been part of Annette Fisher's life. From hearing stories about her grandmother's "old country" to studying under Master Storyteller, Laura Simms, storytelling is a rich resource in Annette's life. Stories can be used in curriculum building, in healing ministry, and in robust politics; they surround us and transform us. Having a Masters in Library Science and a Masters in Public Administration is part of Annette's story. Each of us has a story. After all, there is always a yarn to weave, a tale to tell, and a story that just has to be told. Learn to weave your own story at this workshop!

2pm to 3pm The first presentation in the Marywood Faculty Discussion Series on The Politics of Art/The Art of Politics (location: comfy chair area by the Hot Spot sign on library main floor)

Sr. Mary Ann Zimmer, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, will present: ""Micro-Politics: Conversation, Metaphors, and Power." Lets think about and discuss how power is used in everyday life and in the metaphors we use to speak about academic work.

The Library's very own Marcia Shaffer will lead this workshop. Marcia has a M.A. in Teaching from Marywood University, and has taught elementary levels K-12 where she tried to incorporate sign language whenever she could in her teaching.

Charles Truitt, Assistant Professor of guitar and music theory in the Department of Music, Theater and Dance, will perform selected guitar solos, and will join with mezzo-soprano Carol Tome to perform the six Lute Songs by contemporary Czech composer Petr Eben. The duo will also perform a set of three Songs of the Tide by Australian composer Richard Charlton.

What is a DRAWING SOCIAL?

Drawing Social directed by Ted Michalowski combines a drawing group with a live musical performance: the performers being the subject as well as the entertainment. Every Sunday at AfA Gallery this event presents a different ensemble of progressive and experimental musicians in a venue allowing them to perform uncompromised to students, artists, and appreciators, with expectations extending beyond mainstream. Those who attend are free to draw, write, or kick back and enjoy. This venue fosters the interchange of art forms, valuing the development of culture within community over commodity. This special Drawing Social on Wednesday February 2 at Marywood Library Features a solo performance by Jamie Orfanella on didgeridoo and shakuhachi.

Welcome back!

I would like to welcome back all of the Marywood undergraduate and graduate students for the spring semester! I hope all of you had a great holiday - kicking off the new year, celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa (or any other holiday you might celebrate) and spending time with friends and family. I also hope you all enjoyed the winter vacation (and most importantly stayed warm!).

This semester brings many new items for the library to celebrate. This February we will be kicking off our "First Wednesday" event, which will have a myriad of activities and other fun things. More will posted later about that. We will also be launching our official Facebook page in tandem with First Wednesday, which will streamline the blog and other relevant information all into one convenient location (with pictures of the library throughout history as well!).

Finally, we will be launching a product called LibGuides, though the date for this launch is still not set (it may even be Fall of 2011). LibGuides will provide students with information concerning almost every aspect of the library as well as research guides. Many guides will contain video tutorials and links to other helpful information. These guides will without a doubt help all students - whether you are a freshman needing information on using our resources or a seasoned student in need of advanced help.

With all that out of the way, I want to wish everyone a happy new year! We look forward to serving you for 2011 and beyond!

Library Frequent User Card

Over the last month, Marywood introduced a new program aimed at giving back to students who regularly utilize our resources. All current Marywood students (graduate and undergraduate), faculty, staff, and IHM members are eligible to participate (the general public is not eligible at this time).

When library patrons perform one of three activities, they will receive a hole punch in their frequent user card (or receive one if they do not have one). The criteria for a hole punch are:

1) Checkouts (including reserves, ILL, and holds)
2) Questions about reserves (Ex: "How do I access a URL reserve link?")
3) Ask Here Desk visits (the librarian will send the patron over to the circulation desk with an initialed note)

The following items are NOT eligible for a hole punch:

1) Directional questions
2) Looking up titles in the catalog
3) Copy card/printer questions/refunds/making change
4) Lose and Found inquiries
5) Checking room availability status
6) Computer related questions and sending faxes

After a patron receives 10 punches in their card, they need to write their name on the back of it and bring it to the Study Grounds. They will then receive a free drink and also be entered into a monthly drawing for a $10 gift card to the Study Grounds.

Thanks for utilizing the library, and enjoy the free drink when you get it!

New Business Database

For all the business students out there (and professors), we have some exciting news! We now have full access to a new database called, "Hoover's Online", which can be accessed here. This database is not yet available on the Marywood Library database page (as of this writing) but will be shortly. Nonetheless, full access is still available by clicking the link provided above. This database adds to the already numerous databases we have for business students, making research and teaching even easier than before!

As with any database or research needs, feel free to stop by the "Ask Here" desk for help using the new database. I hope you all enjoy it and find it a useful tool for your research!

Research Assistance

By now, many of you have already been to the library and utilized a number of its resources. But at this point in the semester, you may not have had to do any research. You may ask yourself, "Where can I get assistance finding the materials I need to do my paper?!"? But fret not - help is available during much of the day right in the library!

To get research assistance, simply stop by the "Ask Here" desk, located just beyond the circulation desk when entering from the front of the library. If you have time and a reference librarian is available, you can get research assistance on the spot! If you would also like, you can set up a research consultation at a later date. Simply fill out a green "Research Consultation Information Form" (available at the Ask Here desk) and leave it with a librarian (you can also call 570-348-6264). A reference librarian will contact you to set up an appointment at your convenience (usually between 9 and 5). This appointment will generally last 30 minutes and involve guiding you through the varying methods of searching and acquiring sources.

Finally, you can simply e-mail via our convenient web form if you have general questions or need a quick answer or chat with a librarian online. Feel free to utilize some or all of the resources we have - help is as close as a few clicks away!

A Few Changes

Since last year, there have been a number of changes at the library that need to be noted for students:

1) The film collection is now located downstairs.

2) Music scores have been moved upstairs in the Juvenile section. This was done to open up the second floor area for student use.

3) The help desk is now located on the second floor, near the media center behind glass windows (with a giant "Help Desk" over it). While this change occurred later last year, it is still worth noting. The help desk can assist with all computer related problems, including connecting to the wireless, assisting with password resets and account information, general computer troubleshooting, and printer assistance. The team is made up of Marywood staff and work study students who work far into the night to assist everyone on campus. Welcome Back!

Greetings!

I would like to welcome back all of the Marywood undergraduate and graduate students for the fall semester and welcome all of the new students to Marywood! I hope your summer was full of fun and relaxation!

To kick off the semester, the library will be holding a "Get to Know your Library" day on Thursday, September 2nd from 10-2. While this service is primarily for undergraduate students, graduate students are more than welcome to partake in the day. There will be cookies and coffee starting at 11 by the front doors, but quantities are limited, so it will be on a first come first serve basis. There will be tents around the library giving out information and other free goodies (including free books!).

Students should take advantage of this time to become acquainted with the library's layout and features, including the information and circulation desk, the ask here desk (where I work), the media center, and the computer labs. Students should also get their library ID number for book checkout (sign-up at the circulation desk) and printer cards (available for a dollar downstairs via an automated machine and usable all over campus).

Please don't hesitate to ask any of the librarians a question if you need help with something.

Once again, welcome back! I hope everyone has a productive and fun semester at Marywood!

Summer at the Library

Things are relatively quiet in the summer at the library. However, library staff are trying to get various projects underway including the shifting and moving of library materials and shelves. This moving and shifting will create a much open space near the library's reference collection in time for the new Fall semester.

Observations of the Lone Ask Here GA

As a worker at the Ask Here Desk since September, I have gotten used to the flow of people in the Library on an almost daily basis, and at different times of the day to boot. While I was not here on Monday, I can certainly say that Tuesday was different from the typical. The usual Tuesday morning here at the Library is quiet - very quiet. Low foot traffic, very few questions, and a sense that those who are here are still a bit groggy.

This Tuesday, however, the Library was lively. It had an energy that isn't seen until finals. People walking around participating in raffles, the tours, and listening to the eerie theremin. It didn't hurt that delicious pretzels with all the needed condiments were placed right at the front door.

Yes, it was a sight to see indeed. Participation was fantastic and students were full of energy. Oh, and the Ask Here Desk? It was flooded with questions (at least compared to the usual Tuesday). Even during the night shift I worked the energy continued. It was good to see students here in such numbers enjoying the events.

National Library Week has been a great success so far! Participation in the events has been great, the book sale has been a hit, and the food has been enjoyed by many library patrons! To give our readers an idea of what is going on, I've included a variety of pictures to give you an idea:

These are the delicious pretzels that students were greeted by when they first entered the library on Tuesday. They were made fresh throughout the morning and quite tasty! They were grabbed very fast!

This was Tuesday's Jar of Candy - each day has a new jar and a new winner. tudents can participate by simply guessing the number of pieces to win the whole thing! The last day for this event is today.

This is the scene soon after walking into the library. During the day (the times are at the front desk) a variety of things are offered - from citation help to resume development help.

This is the view from the other side of the photo above. Diversity United made quite the nice photo display, wouldn't you agree?

This is a photo showing some of our new READ Posters on display at the circulation desk. The new posters are in many places around the circulation desk and worth checking out. You might be surprised by who you see featured!

This was the book and media display upstairs for the Bollywood presentation. Bollywood is the nickname given to India's film industry, and is a portmanteau of Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood. The presentation was given by the Diversity Office.

Art instructor Ted Michalowski (in the black shirt) held a drawing social in front of the live performance.

The live performer, playing an instrument called the "Theremin". The instrument is used widely in movie soundtracks because of its eerie sound. I recommend seeing the Wikipedia article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin

This is a fun shot showing lines of books inside the library that are for sale. Aside from this large quantity of books there is also a tent outside the library with boxes of books.

As a closing picture, I thought it appropriate to show a photo of Kelly Erin Ruddy (at the circulation desk). She worked here at the library and passed away in an unfortunate accident this past January. She will always be remembered and missed.

National Library Week - READ Posters

Every year during NWL the Marywood Library unveils new READ Posters. These posters feature people from all around our campus - students, faculty, and staff alike - enjoying some of the many books we have to offer. Last year, we featured staff from Security and Dining Services, the President of the University, Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Ph.D., and students from a variety of different majors. The posters are displayed in the Marywood Library in different areas.

This year's READ Posters will be unveiled next week - but if you keep an eye on this blog, you can get a sneak peek at some of them before they are unveiled! As next week progresses, the rest of the posters will be added to the blog.

Just remember that any book lover can be featured on a READ Poster. The READ Posters display only a small portion of the people who use and enjoy the Library here at Marywood. The posters are meant to show you that no matter what you're here for at Marywood you can always enjoy a good book from the Marywood Library!

Fun Activities during National Library Week at the Marywood Libary

Daily

Take our 10-min library tour and enter to win our Grand Prize - $75 cash! The tour runs Mon-Thurs at 12 noon, 12:15, 12:30 and 12:45. Tour starts at the Library Front Desk.You may enter to win more than once by taking the tour more than once (limit is one tour per day).

Marywood Library Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and the Marywood Library with Diversity United is celebrating with a selection of books and media dedicated to Black History and the prominent figures throughout history, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Also available for free are Unity Pins, which can be worn during the month to celebrate the achievements of African American's throughout history. More Digitized Vinyl Treasures Available to You

The Dickens classic was appropriately requested and uploaded in the vinyl digitization project. Will the spirits once again convince our favorite curmudgeon, played by Ralph Richardson, to change his ways?

There have been some other recent additions to the vinyl digitization project including actor Vincent Price reading the poetry of British Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Who can resist Price’s “Ozymandias” interpretation? The collection is available for listening through the Marywood University library catalog (http://lib.marywood.edu/) by clicking on “Digital Library,” “Hyperion Hierarchy,” and “Vinyl Digitization.” If there are problems with viewing the album art or listening to the files, pop-up blockers may need to be disabled.

The vinyl digitization collection only contains a small fraction of the 5,400 titles held by the library. This is a massive and diverse collection, and suggestions for records to be digitized and uploaded are welcome. The most direct way to search or browse the available titles is to visit the library catalog (http://lib.marywood.edu/), click on “Power Search,” and limit “Item Category 1” to “Sound Recording.” It is then possible to browse titles without entering specific terms or to search with subject, title, or artist terms. Priority is given to the titles with the strongest potential educational value (meaning items that can be used for classroom listening or academic projects). Turnitin.com comes to Marywood

Faculty can now have access to Turnitin.com, an originality checking tool that "allows educators to check students' work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against continuously updated databases". Also, this program allows for online peer reviewing and digital grading. http://turnitin.com/static/index.html

Scranton Reads at the Library

The library has a display of Vietnam War books and DVDs in honor of this year's Scranton Reads Book, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.

Scranton Reads is a community reading event organized by the City of Scranton and the Albright Memorial Library. Each year during the month of October, citizens of Scranton get together to read a great work of literature. They participate in book discussions and special events related to the chosen work. Scranton Reads has two main goals. The first goal is to encourage reading among people of all ages. The second goal is to bring the community together through sharing a common experience. National library week-Tuesday

Hello Everyone,

National library week is moving ahead steadily in the library. Yesterday was a fun day. Although our pizza tasting event was cancelled due to conflicts, we had some yummy delicious treats cake and cookies.

Today, we have some more treats in the library. We will also be having a candy guessing contest. I know you don't want to see any more candy after Easter, but with finals around the corner, it might be a useful comfort food. Besides, you get to keep the jar! We will also have storytelling from 1-2. If you missed the band yesterday, don't worry they'll be back on Thursday from 6-8.

We are also conducting a survey about the library's website. It's important that we have your opinion, and all entries will be entered into a drawing for a prize. We can't fix a problem if we don't know that it exists. I encourage you to give us your opinions so we could make your life easier. We are here to make your research experience as easy as possible. Help us to do that!

The book sale will continue throughout the week. If you are a bookworm like me, take advantage of it!!!

Remember to look on campus for READ posters, and please don't take them off the walls. People want to try to enter the contest. After the contest on Friday, you could race to collect them. We will hang this year's READ posters around the library. If you want to look at them for reference for the contest, go to the circulation desk.

A Reply to the Library Never Has Anything

Hello Everyone,

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard the pharse the library never has anything or for a school with five doctoral programs with a sixth one on the way, you would think that they would have more library resources. As a graduate student, you will never find me objecting to the library adding to its collection in any way, shape, or form.

The one thing that many of these people do not realize, however, is just because we don't have something whether it be a book or article, does not mean that we cannot get it for you. For instance, we are a member of PALCI E-Z Borrow. I just call it E-Z Borrow for short because it's easy. E-Z Borrow is a lending agreement for books with all the academic libraries in Pennsylvania along with some in New Jersey and West Virginia. Now you won't be able to get reference books or rare archival materials, but you will be able to get pretty much any other book in about 3-10 days.

Also in terms of articles, we use Rapid ILL. All you have to do is place a request for an article, and we'll search the surrounding libraries for it. Depending on the time of the request and the volume of requests, you could recieve your article that same day or in a couple of days via email. Personally, the longest it ever took me to receive something was a week, but there was a glitch in the system. Now you may notice a field that asks how much are you willing to pay for this item. Don't worry about that field. 99.9% of the time, there is no charge, and we will contact you before doing anything. As I mentioned in a prior post, I am working on my masters thesis. I have literally use Rapid ILL over a hundred times, and I have been only asked to pay once. I ended up finding the article on google scholar for free.

In order to do this all you have to do is have the barcode on the back of your student ID ready and head to the library home page and click on interlibrary loan (I circled the exact location in red in the picture) both EZ-Borrow and Rapid ILL will be on the next page. Click on which one you need and enter your student ID to begin.

As much we all may despite it, not all research could be at your finger tips immediately. Consequently, we all have the responsibility to start our research early to ensure that we have adequate resources for our projects. Remember if you ever need any help getting started you could come by the Ask Here desk, schedule an appointment using the green Research Consultation form, and/or email us at libraryhelp@maryu.marywood.edu.

Library Announces Cafe Naming Contest

The Library, in collaboration with Marywood University Dining Services, is in the process of planning the addition of a Cafe to the Library for Fall, 2009. In anticipation of this exciting new addition, we are conducting a contest to name the new cafe. Entries will be accepted between Wednesday, April 1st and 11:59 PM, Sunday, April 12. A panel of judges, including the Director of Library Services and the Director of Dining Services, will select the three most creative names from all of the submissions. During National Library Week, April 13-17, the Marywood community will be invited to vote for their favorite name via a penny war, the proceeds of which will be donated to Campus Ministry.

The contest is open to everyone in the Marywood community. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit, however, in the case of duplicate entries, the submitter of the first entry of the name will be declared the winner. Entries will be judged for their creativity and appropriateness. Copyrighted names will not be accepted. Besides bragging rights, the winner will receive the grand prize of a home coffee brewer provided by Green Mountain Coffee. All submissions will be entered into a drawing for a Dining Services gift certificate for a coffee a day for one full year.

One on One Appointments!!!!

Hello Everyone,

I do not know about you, but I have a ton of research papers and stuff to do every semester. Many of you come to the Ask Here desk, the reference desk, to get assistance with your research, which is cool because we're here to make your life easier.

I know that sometimes when I am working someone is bound to come up with a topic that I have no clue where to begin and I need to try a couple of things out first. Some people find that annoying and really just want the results and a discussion of the research findings. Other times you want an intensive research session with someone. If you are like me and working on your Masters thesis, it's always nice to have a person help you with your research and make sure you found everything under the sun. Unfortunately, there may be a line, and the reference librarian may not be able to give you the attention you need.

I completely understand this sentiment, and there is a solution for your problem!!!! We have these beautiful green Research Consultation forms at the Ask Here desk. Here is how it works, you fill out the form, and we will assign a reference librarian to give you a half hour appointment to go over your research. The reference librarians here do their research early so you don't have sit there and wait while they tweak the results.

There's no limit on the number of times you could use this resource!!! So drop on by any time and schedule a one on one research appointment.

A Legitimate Wikipedia

Hello Everyone,

I want to talk to you about a new database that we have on trial called CredoReference. Credo uses about 190 reference books to provide people with introductory information on any given topic. This is different from Wikipedia. As you probably received the lecture time and time again from the reference librarians and professors, anyone from John Doe to Joe the plumber, could write and change information on Wikipedia. Consequently, many professors don't like students using Wikipedia because it is hard to verify the veracity of the information.

I know some students are addicted to Wikipedia and use it regularly despite this issue. Don't worry. I'm not going to give you the lecture again or criticize you for using it. Instead, I am going to tell you to try Credo. Everything there is legitimate and verified.

Plus, there is a really cool feature called the concept map. Say your professor gives you a topic that you have no clue what he or she is talking about, or you cannot seem to find anything about your topic, clicking on the concept map will link your topic to things closely related to your topic. In addition, it gives you a visual representation of the topic--take a look at the picture.(Double click on the picture, so you could take a closer look!!!) It also keeps track of your past research.

Mind you, this is only a trial, and access to it may be gone any day now. If you like it, however, tell us!!! Although we would love to get every database under the sun to help you with your research, we have a responsibility to use our funding wisely to benefit as many students as possible. Input from professors, students, and staff is one of the few ways we have to decide whether to obtain a database for students. Introductions and National Library Week

Hello,

Welcome to the Marywood University's library blog! My name is Erin Dunleavy, and I am the graduate assistant to the reference department. I am a confirmed library geek, and I am proud to admit it! I have been asked to start writing about my insights and what is going on here in the library from a student/library perspective. I plan to contribute regularly and keep you up to date as much as possible.

Now that the introductions are done, I have a lot to tell you. You probably received and will continue to receive a number of emails about National Library Week. So what are we doing with this National Library Week? We are pretty much having a week long celebration here to honor the library and its patrons.

What does mean to you? Well on the academic side, if there's any question about the library that you have, you can find out the answer by attending our information sessions. (Not that you couldn't do that any other day!) You can test your library skills with our library quiz. A prize will be given to the top three.

Also, if you have any overdue books, we are granting amnesty that week to our patrons. Furthermore, if you have a pet peeve with the library, you could let us know because we will be conducting a library survey that week.

On the fun side, we will have yummy delicious treats all week from pizza to coffee, to Rita's ice, etc. We will also have games, live music, and a number of prizes throughout the week. Plus we be having a week long book sale.

This is generally what is going to be happening during the week. On each day, I will post the specific events taking place here in the library.

Library Announces Cafe Naming Contest

The contest is open to everyone in the Marywood community. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit, however, in the case of duplicate entries, the submitter of the first entry of the name will be declared the winner. Entries will be judged for their creativity and appropriateness. Copyrighted names will not be accepted. Besides bragging rights, the winner will receive the grand prize of a home coffee brewer provided by Green Mountain Coffee. All submissions will be entered into a drawing for a Dining Services gift certificate for a coffee a day for one full year.

Ask Here Roadshow

Beginning the week of February 9, librarians will begin to regularly visit McGowan and Nazareth Halls to assist people with their research needs. We will be prepared to help with our knowledge and a laptop computer. I hope that you will stop by and see us. Our easy-to-remember schedule is as follows:
--Mondays from 1 to 2:30pm in the 2nd floor common area in Nazareth Hall
--Thursdays from 1 to 2:30pm in the 1st floor common area in McGowan Hall
We will follow this schedule throughout the spring semester when classes are in session.

Credo Reference - a trial database

Credo Reference is an online reference library that provides access to 120 reference books such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias and quotation books that cover a wide variety of subject areas. So although this site is not specific to biography, it can search for biographical information from a variety of subject areas. The biographical section itself searches through 'Debrett's People of Today', The Macmillan Dictionary of Women's Biography' and 'The Penguin Biographical Dictionary of Women'. By selecting the browse feature, you can take a look at all the books CREDO Reference has access to under the specific subject headings.

Ask Here Roadshow

The last stop of the semester for the Ask Here Roadshow will be on Monday, May 5 at Loughran Hall from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. If the weather cooperates, you will see me outside the main entrance of the hall. If not, I will be in the lobby. Either way, I hope that you will ask me any last minute research questions that you might have or simply say hello and pick up an Ask Here beach ball or pen.

I appreciate your support this semester, and I appreciate the fact that no one looked at me as if I were out of my mind hanging around on campus, waiting for research questions, and throwing beach balls at people. For those of you who are graduating and leaving Marywood, congratulations. I hope that all goes well for you. For those of you returning, keep an eye out for me around campus in the fall semester.

The Winners in the Barbara Hoffman English 160 Writing Award

Congratulations to the winners of the Barbara Hoffman English 160 Writing Award--this is the fifth year for the Award. The Award honors three students who have mastered the use of information including retrieval and evaluation coupled with excellent writing mechanics. For the third year in a row, Dr. Erin Sadlak's student is the first place winner.

First place winner with an award of $75. is Lisa Forcellini whose entry is entitled: "Why Child Obesity Should Not be Considered Parental Neglect." Dr. Erin Sadlak, professor, received $25.

Second place winner with an award of $50. is Deanna Grella whose entry is entitled: "Out with the Old, in with the New? Not this Time." Deanna's professor is Dr. Laurie McMillan.

Third place winner with an award of $25. is Christine Lauff whose entry is entitled: "Embryonic Stem Cell Research." Lisa's professor is David Wasson.

The judges for the Award, Carol Tome and Annette Fisher, librarians, and Dr. Helen Bittel, English professor, were pleased that the entries were excellent this year---it made judging that much tougher but it also showcased the writing and library research abilities of the students.

Our festivities during National Library Week will draw to a close today with more fun and exciting happenings! Rita's Italian Ice will be served beginning at 11am today in front of the library's main entrance. Also beginning at 11am in front of the library's main entrance, there will be live music! The DAILY DRAWINGS, LIBRARY RAFFLE, LIBRARY TOUR and others will continue today. Winners for the Library Raffle, the Count the Candy contest, and the Grand Prize will be announced today at 4:30pm.

Activities to celebrate National Library Week at Marywood Library on Thursday included a library Raffle for a chance to win two passes to the SWB Yankees vs. Rochester Red Wings game on Saturday April 19 and one Cranium Board Game. The library tent outside the LRC Building offered free treats and other giveaways today. The library book sale sold a good number of books. More people have participated our 5-minute library tours to win a digital camera.

National Library Week Festivities Continue

On the 3rd day of the National Library Week celebration our library set up a tent outside the LRC, and handed out popcorn and soft pretzels from 11-1. Students also entered to win door prizes, participated in library tours and took part in the question of the day challenge. The ongoing booksale was also a success and due to the nice weather, the sale will be set up outside and held until 6pm today.

Celebration Continues

On the 2nd day of the National Library Week celebration, our library set up a tent outside the Learning Resources Center. From 11-1pm, we served about 130 popcorn boxes, and gave away the beach balls and pens, and tickets for tours, and drawings. It was a success! The 5-minute tour of the library at 12 noon had almost 20 people, more than half were students! There is also the book sale.
